President-elect of The Gambia, Mr Adama Barrow has declared that the tenure of President Yahya Jammeh is “officially over.” He made the statement in a tweet message to Gambians few moments ago adding that a new Gambia has begun. Yesterday, Barrow tweeted that “his countrymen are at the brink of making another world history tomorrow, (today) after defeating Yahya Jammeh in the 1 December election. ” We made history on the first day of December. Our future starts tomorrow”, he said in a tweet yesterday morning. Although Barrow is presently sequestered in Dakar, Senegal, leaders of the regional bloc ECOWAS have said he would be sworn in on the Gambian soil, meaning they would drive away President Yahya Jammeh whose tenure just expired. The ECOWAS leaders, in a mediatory efforts led by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari failed to convince Jammeh to voluntarily leave office after losing the 1 December election to Barrow, a real estate businessman. Gambia’s National Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution that gave the incumbent president Yahya Jammeh a three-month tenure extension, according to Gambian state television. Jammeh lost to opposition candidate Adama Barrow in the December 2016 presidential elction after ruling the West African nation for 22 years. But he later announced that the the election results were flawed and unacceptable Two days ago, in a last minute effort to continue his hold onto power, he declared a state of emergency, citing “extraordinary” foreign interference in the country’s post-electoral crisis. The declaration was necessary, he said on state television, after the “unprecedented and extraordinary amount of foreign inference in the December 1 presidential elections and also in the internal affairs of The Gambia.” Meanwhile SKYTREND NEWS gathered that Nigeria soldiers had arrived at a base of the Economic Community of West African States troops in Senegal to ensure that President Yahya Jammeh of the Gambia steps down on Thursday, January 19.
