Safe and Sane With Dr Ola: Talking fists – #DiamondBankMustSayNoToViolence!! I promised to start the series on “Talking Fists” this week. I believe strongly that we all have a role to play when it comes to educating and reorientation of ourselves about the unbridled violence that is currently rampant in our society. As a mental health physician, I have a role to play individually likewise, every one of us who are either health professionals or not. The government and all its agencies have their role to play. Above all, Corporate organizations also have roles to play. Organizations like banks, and companies should see themselves as brands that should be recognized for decency and the promotion of lifestyles and attitude that are compatible with peaceful and socially acceptable ways of human relationships. [caption id="attachment_47893" align="alignnone" width="607"] Domestic Violence This Diamond Bank Ad Campaign Is Figurative Of Promoting Domestic Violence[/caption] A brand that is as big as “Diamond Bank “should not be directly or indirectly promoting “Spousal violence”. A bank’s advertisement should promote harmonious and mutually acceptable relationship between persons while trying to promote any of their products. It is corporate rascality for a brand like diamond bank to put up an advertorial clearly depicting aggression as a means towards achieving an end. I want you to just analyze this picture. The question is “whose idea was this?”. We need to know how this scaled through the scrutiny of those in charge of PR for diamond bank. If this was meant to be a joke, I can tell you it is not the best way of sharing fun. The pictorial advert is subliminally promoting aggression. The challenge is that if the gender roles in the cartoon had been reversed, a lot of people would have noticed how terrible the idea behind the cartoon is with regards to human relations. It is time for us to all rise up and speak against all forms of violence in our society. We can communicate our opinion and register our grievances without resorting to abusive behavior and all forms of aggression. Let us all share this until diamond bank withdraws this advert from circulation (if they haven’t). Diamond Bank must come out strongly to tell us, Nigerians, that they are against all forms of aggression and abuse as a means of communication within our homes. #DiamondBankMustSayNoToViolence. Our fists don’t have to do the talking!!! Kindly send your comments and questions to ola.ibigbami@yahoo.com, whatsapp +2348030652116. Till next week, Stay safe and sane; help someone do the same!
