At least five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed while four others sustained critical injuries when a Toyota Hilux patrol vehicle rammed into landmines/ Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) suspected to have been planted by members of the dreaded boko haram terrorists.

The incident, according to Vanguard reports, took place in Buma village on Saturday at about 8:30am.

Buma village is 15 kilometres drive from troubled Ngamdu District of Kaga Local Government Area of Borno state.

Kaga is the headquarters of Beneshiekh which is south west and about 85 kilometres drive from Maiduguri, the state capital.

Vanguard reports that the occupants of the ill fated vehicle were on patrol before stepping on the planted IEDs which exploded leaving five members of the Civilian JTF including another volunteer dead.

The source further revealed that, already, the dead victims have been buried according to Islamic rite, while two of those who sustained severe injuries have been rushed to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Boko Haram's six-year insurgency in North-eastern Nigeria has led to the death of some 17,000 people, destroyed more than 1,000 schools and displaced more than 1.5million people.

The insurgency has kept about one million children out of school in Nigeria, particularly in the three neighbouring states, the UN children’s agency said earlier this week.

Boko Haram has sworn allegiance to the Islamic State and often displays its trademark black flag. Only a few days ago, the Islamic State, to which Boko Haram is affiliated, said its West Africa division had launched more than 100 attacks, killing more than 1,000 people over the past two months, the Site Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist websites, reported.
