Kogi election is a chance for INEC to reinvent itself - Dino Melaye

Dino Melaye, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the upcoming November 11 election in Kogi State, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore its credibility in the lead-up to the polls.

He made this plea during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today show, where he discussed his prospects in the election and reacted to a recent mock election conducted by INEC.

Dino calls for INEC reform

Melaye, known for his outspokenness, had previously caused a stir during the national collation center’s proceedings, questioning INEC’s operational methods during the presidential and national assembly elections and expressing dissatisfaction with the electoral umpire’s performance at the time.

In response to the recent mock election conducted by INEC, Melaye emphasized that such a practice wasn’t sufficient to evaluate INEC’s performance, citing instances of mock performance during the 2019 elections that were followed by irregularities.

He viewed the forthcoming Kogi election as an opportunity for INEC to rectify the flaws of the previous election, emphasizing that INEC had the chance to rebuild its image through the upcoming elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo.

When asked about his trust in INEC, Melaye referred to the issues that had arisen during the last election, suggesting that the Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo elections presented an opportunity for the electoral commission to undergo a transformation and regain public trust.
