Director Pink, the Nigerian music video director, says she abandoned her dream of becoming an actress after feeling “humiliated” during auditions.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, Pink said her initial ambition was to pursue acting but that repeated rejections and inappropriate experiences during auditions discouraged her.
The director said her experiences at auditions inspired her to find her own path behind the camera.
“I wanted to be an actress but I didn’t know how to tell my parents. I started chasing it but I think I felt humiliated at some point,” she said.
“During auditions you know what happens. So that was one of the points in my life that I was like, I want to be a boss of my own.
“I got a lot of ‘nos’ and people saying, ‘come to this location’. Those were the things that made me think I wasn’t going to do this.
“I went to auditions and you’ll stand on queues for long hours and it did not really fit my vibe.
“I’m not going to lie to you, being a director and cinematographer is hard. I’ve had people say they’re interested in what I do, but after the first day, they’ve given up.
“It takes a lot and you’ll also need to sacrifice a lot — like your social life. I had been doing this for over five years before I even got my break.”
