Gunmen have kidnapped Hajiya Hafsat Abubakar, the step mother of the legislator representing Doguwa Constituency in the Kano state House of Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Mohammed Riruwai.

Hajiya Hafsat was abducted at her home in Riruwai town in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano on Thursday around 2:30am but it is only coming to media attention now.

The kidnappers are demanding for N60 million ransom, according to Daily Trust reports.

Mr Riruwai confirmed that his aged step mother was attacked and whisked away to an unknown destination by the gunmen.

He said: “About 20 armed men stormed our family house for the mission. Hours after her abduction, the kidnappers called my mobile phone line intimating me that they had abducted my step mother.

“They were bold to tell me that since I am an influential figure in the state, I should look for money to pay the ransom. They demanded N60m ransom before my step mother can regain her freedom,” he said.

The gunmen had hatched a trick of storming his father’s house with guns, clubs and machetes concealed in their bodies and alerted the occupants of the house that one Ibrahim suffered a snake bite which they came to rescue.

He said it was in the course of the supposed help they whisked his mother away in a waiting vehicle.
Daily Trust also learnt that another woman (name withheld) was also kidnapped at Burji village in Doguwa local government. The woman is a mother to a popular herbalist, one Maitalan Serah.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Commissioner, Alhaji Muhammadu Musa Katsina said four suspects had been arrested in connection with the abduction and that the Police anti-kidnap squad had swung into action to rescue the old woman alive.

He said the initial intention by the kidnappers was to abduct the legislator, stressing that they only decided to change their tactics from cattle rustling to kidnapping knowing that they had been cowed into submission.

He said the suspects so far arrested were cooperating with the Police in tracing their accomplices.
