Rivers State is staring at a political inferno. As impeachment threats tighten around Governor Siminalayi Fubara, a fierce internal rebellion has erupted within the All Progressives Congress, with party leaders warning that the move amounts to a legislative coup capable of destroying the APC from within and plunging the state into deeper chaos.
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has openly challenged the unfolding impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, calling on the Chief Judge of the state to obey a subsisting court injunction and reject any resolution from the House of Assembly.
Court order ignored – APC warns judiciary
In a statement released in Port Harcourt on Saturday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Darlington Nwauju, urged the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Simeon Amadi, to comply strictly with an interim injunction restraining him from receiving or acting on resolutions connected to the impeachment process.
According to SKYTREND NEWS reports, the injunction was issued in Suit No: OYHC/7/CS/2026, following growing legal concerns over the conduct of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Legislative coup d’état – APC turns on its own lawmakers
Nwauju, who speaks for the Emeka Beke-led Rivers APC camp, described the impeachment move as a “choreographed legislative coup d’état” carried out by lawmakers who had earlier pledged loyalty to the party and the President.
He expressed shock that most of the lawmakers driving the impeachment are members of the ruling party, warning that their actions undermine the collective interest, growth and survival of the APC in Rivers State.
“We have painstakingly analysed the issues leading up to this impeachment process,” the statement read. “Regrettably, honourable members who trumpeted loyalty to our party and Mr President have now surrendered themselves to a legislative overreach that threatens our future.”
Constitutional power or political abuse – APC raises red flag
While acknowledging that Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution empowers legislatures to conduct impeachment, the party argued that the provision is not absolute.
Nwauju pointed out that paragraph 11 of the same section leaves the definition of “gross misconduct” to the discretion of lawmakers, making impeachment allegations largely subjective in the court of public opinion.
According to SKYTREND NEWS findings, the APC warned that no matter how well crafted the allegations may appear, they remain politically interpretative and dangerously open to abuse.
A dangerous footnote – party survival at stake
The Rivers APC said the impeachment move could become a damaging historical marker in the party’s struggle for relevance in the state.
“This unfortunate path chosen by the legislature serves as a dangerous footnote to the health and survival of the APC in Rivers State,” the statement warned, adding that continued defiance could permanently fracture the party.
Call to national leadership – save the party now
Beyond the judiciary, the Rivers APC called on the national leadership of the party to intervene urgently.
The statement urged the APC National Working Committee to activate its internal conflict resolution mechanisms under Article 21(b)(iii) of the 2022 APC Constitution to avert what it described as an “embarrassing implosion.”
Political tension escalates – legal battle deepens
The warning comes amid rising political tension in Rivers State following the House of Assembly’s decision to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that the Rivers State High Court had restrained Justice Amadi from receiving or acting on any correspondence from the House of Assembly related to the impeachment.
