Nigeria’s air war just sent a brutal message to terrorists in the North East. In a coordinated series of close air support and air interdiction missions, the Nigerian Air Force has eliminated more than 40 terrorists in Borno State, crushing planned attacks, restoring calm to volatile communities and reinforcing ground troops battling insurgents.

The decisive strikes were carried out by the Nigerian Air Force at Azir and Musarram in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno, areas long plagued by Boko Haram and ISWAP activity. SKYTREND NEWS reports that the operations have significantly disrupted terrorist movements and weakened their operational capacity in the axis.

Intelligence-led air power – how the strikes unfolded

In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, the Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Ehimen Ejodame, said the operations were conducted on January 15 and 16 by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI.

Ejodame explained that the missions were launched following actionable intelligence and executed in close coordination with troops already in contact with terrorists on the ground.

Distress call answered – Azir hit at dawn

According to the NAF, in the early hours of January 16, fighter aircraft responded swiftly to a distress call from troops engaged with terrorists withdrawing from Azir.

Further aerial scans revealed terrorist elements attempting to regroup under nearby tree cover. Precision airstrikes were immediately carried out in successive passes, neutralising several fighters and preventing any reorganisation.

Post-strike assessments confirmed that no further threats remained in the area. Feedback from ground troops, local authorities and community sources indicated a significant degradation of terrorist presence and a return of relative calm to Azir.

Canoes turned targets – Musarram interdiction devastates fighters

Earlier, on January 15, NAF air assets carried out a devastating air interdiction mission at Musarram in the Tumbuns general area.

Intelligence had revealed that terrorists were assembling on canoes to launch coordinated attacks along the Baga and Fish Dam axis. On arrival, aircraft sighted about 10 canoes and more than 40 suspected terrorists.

The fighters were engaged in multiple attack runs, throwing them into total disarray. Some fleeing elements were trailed and neutralised, while others who attempted to regroup at an assembly point were also struck, effectively dismantling the terrorist concentration.

Air Chief reacts – sustained pressure assured

Reacting to the successful operations, the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to providing timely and decisive air support to ground forces.

Aneke said the strikes demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led air power and close air ground coordination in denying terrorists freedom of action. He assured Nigerians that sustained pressure would continue as the Armed Forces intensify efforts to degrade terrorist capabilities and stabilise affected communities.

Why Azir and Musarram matter – a deadly history

Azir and Musarram have remained persistent flashpoints of insecurity due to long-standing Boko Haram and ISWAP operations. In November 2025, troops around Wajiroko in Azir Multe were ambushed, resulting in the killing of soldiers and Civilian Joint Task Force members, including the execution of a captured Brigadier General, Musa Uba.

According to SKYTREND NEWS findings, the latest air operations are viewed by military analysts as a strategic response aimed at preventing a repeat of such high-impact attacks and reasserting control over the troubled axis.
