Police in Lagos yesterday said they were on the trail of fleeing members of the 12-man gang that abducted three female students of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu, penultimate Monday.

The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said though the girls had been rescued, the command was not resting until other members of the gang were arrested.

He said detectives working on the case had been able to get useful information on the activities of the gang.

According to him, detectives were working on the bits and pieces of information collected. He stressed that the first phase of the operation had been concluded with the rescue of the girls, and would move to the next.

“The next phase is how to track down other fleeing members of the gang. We will not rest until we round them all up,” he said.

In a related development, Owoseni, said yesterday that the command arrested 73 armed robbery suspects between January and March 6.

He spoke while parading no fewer than 60 suspects before newsmen, including members of the Awawa secret cult.

He said 84 suspected members of different cult groups were arrested within the same period, adding that 31 arms and 92 cartridges were recovered from the suspects.

Owoseni added that two suspected armed robbers died in a gun duel with the police, while 47 stolen vehicles were recovered.

The commissioner said 2,009 suspects were arrested in some black spots in the state, adding that 213 were screened out, while 1,134 were prosecuted within the period.

According to him, 1,341 motorcycles were impounded for plying restricted roads and streets.

He commended the media for the support it gave the police to achieve the feat recorded, particularly the publicity it gave the police that aided the release of the three secondary school students in Ikorodu. Fifty suspected Awawa secret cult members, some having special identity marks on their faces were remanded after the parade.
