Till next week, Stay and Sane: Help others do the same by sharing this article!!!
There are lots of people who experience negative feelings of shame, remorse or disgust when they are confronted with the outcomes of their violent behaviors and when their propensity towards violence seems to be tending towards recidivism. This individuals need to seek professional help as soon as possible. A stitch in time saves nine. Therapists are trained to assess and manage anger problems. I can attest to the fact that even just one session of focused psychological intervention can avert adverse outcomes of a violent encounter. Therapy sessions help the individual to reflect and identify the possible triggers for his/her aggressive behavior and to explore options for avoiding or resolving conflicts without recourse to being aggressive either subtly or overtly. Individuals who are also victims of aggressive behavior or potential victims of aggressive behavior need to also avoid or flee away from every appearance of such aggressive encounters. You don’t have to wait till things become life threatening before you seek professional help. The best setting for such professional help is the hospital. Every standard hospital needs to have a mental health team that will include psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers and other allied health professionals who can be involved in exploring conflicts and resolving them. Generally, health workers are trained to recognize features of someone who has been physically abused. However, there has to be a protocol for referring and providing support for persons who are victims or potential victims of abuse. There is no point identifying if you can’t help out. Depending on the factors responsible for the aggressive behavior, the possible solutions could include (but not limited to) the use of medications.
Beyond the hospitals, religious groups, non-governmental organizations and other entities interested in helping persons who have this challenge can also be involved in intervening when there are crisis situations. In actual fact, interpersonal conflict resolution is a skill that everyone needs to learn. We must all learn how to de-escalate potentially violent situations and avoid physical engagements that can be injurious to ourselves or others. We have all probably heard of brothers killing brothers, wives killing husbands, parents killing their children, husbands killing their wives, friends killing friends etc. all in a fit of rage. These wanton killings are mostly avoidable if we do all things to ensure safety and sanity amongst ourselves.
