Tacha Akide, the former BBNaija housemate, has tackled Burna Boy, Tems, and Ayra Starr for their Met Gala outfits.
Held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night, this year’s Met Gala, with the theme ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,’ celebrated the artistry of black fashion.
The dress code ‘Tailored for You’ encouraged bold, personalised looks, with notable Nigerians like Tems, Ayra Starr, Chimamanda Adichie, and Burna Boy dazzling on the red carpet.
However, the three singers came under fire in some quarters on social media for their outfit choices.
In a recent social media post, Tacha expressed disappointment that the artistes “missed a golden opportunity to showcase Nigerian creativity”.
The reality star questioned why Tems wore an outfit by British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng, suggesting she wasn’t the designer’s first choice.
“I think somebody had to say it, but the Nigerians at the Met Gala did not represent and this is coming from a place of love. You know I love Ayra Starr, Tems, and I am crazy about Burna Boy, but these guys did not represent at all,” she said.
“Let’s talk about Tems, baby girl I get the outfit was from Ozwald Boateng, but it is very clear that you were not their first choice because this outfit, I am not understanding it at all. Have you all not heard of Veekee James, Tubor, Medlin Boss, Swanky Jerry, Extra Brides of Lagos? They would have brought the moon down for your outfit. As in pure creativity.”
The reality star also slammed Ayra Starr’s look as “underwhelming” for a rising Afrobeats icon.
“Now, to Ayra Starr, you are the future of Afrobeats, our Gen Z baddie, you cannot be wearing that to the Met Gala. It is giving last minute, I was not informed,” she said.
“Do you know what Veekee James or Extra Brides would have done for you? You would have shut down the Met Gala with everyone asking who is she? Where is she from? Baby girl, this look is giving Mary Amaka, do not do it again please.”
Tacha also criticised Burna Boy’s outfit while urging Nigerian music stars to collaborate with homegrown talent if international designers don’t prioritise them.
“If these designers are not making you their first choice, my dear come home. Use your local Nigerian designers. Burna Boy you always kill the red carpet, what happened now? You have never missed but this time that yellow shirt is giving rushed. You know we love you but next Met Gala, you all better come correct,” the reality star added.
