The Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has said that the State does not have a security vote like other states. He said what Ekiti has is contingency vote.
Dr Fayemi made the statement while answering questions from a group of bloggers who visited the State last weekend on a tour of the projects executed by his administration and for a no-holds-barred interactive session with the governor.
“We don’t have a security vote in Ekiti, but we have a contingency vote of N75 million that goes to all security agencies, even though they are federal agencies,” the governor said.
The governor had invited a group of frontline bloggers and social media commentators mostly youths to Ikogosi Warm Spring and Resort and to have an all round assessment of the state on 7th and 8th February, 2014.
Earlier on, some Commissioners and Special Advisers in the administration had explained various achievements and exploits of their various ministries and beats to the social media players.
Dr. Kayode Fayemi who gave an opening remarks at the session explained that his success was due to careful planning and a clear-cut blueprint before he became governor.
“We wanted people to know that government is not happenstance. We wanted people to know that government is not accidental. In every of our plan, we were specific about what we were going to do, the number of schools to be renovated.
Governor Fayemi said it wasn’t accidental that Ekiti State were the fastest to raise money in the capital market and was not also accidental that the state now has the lowest HIV prevalence in the country.
The Governor added that throughout the three and a half years he was fighting to reclaim his stolen mandate, his team always prepared an alternative budget to the one by the State Government.
Asked about his monthly salary, he answered, “My salary is N549, 000 monthly, but don’t forget, I live in a free house. I eat free food. I drive free cars. I don’t get furniture allowance because I live in a free house, but my commissioners get because they are not entitled to free accommodation.”
The governor said that his administration was the first in Ekiti to introduce the integrated payroll system, which enabled the elimination of ghost workers. He claimed that it’s he same day he gets his own salary alert that a teacher in Iyemero or any other town gets his or her own.
Speaking on allegation of abandoning projects started by his predecessor, Governor Fayemi said: “My administration did not abandon any project started by Engineer Segun Oni. He didn’t use his personal money for the projects. It was Ekiti money. We would be shooting ourselves in the leg if we abandoned them”.
Governor Fayemi will be the first public office holder in Nigeria to assemble bloggers and social media players across the country in an interactive session and this would definitely be a reference point for successive governments.
