Why Armed Soldiers Invaded, Shutdown Daily Trust Abuja Office Armed soldiers on Sunday invaded Daily Trust headquarters in Jabi area of Abuja, taking away computers, laptops and other properties from the newsroom. According to Punch Newspaper, the incident might not be unconnected with the lead story of Daily Trust on Sunday on military operations in the North East. The armed soldiers arrested Uthman Abubakar, the newspaper’s regional editor, and Ibrahim Sawab, a reporter. The soldiers barricaded the gate of the Maiduguri office, after arresting the two editorial staff. Hours after shutting down the Maiduguri office, another set of soldiers invaded the head office in Abuja, carting away computers and ordering all members of staff to leave the newsroom. A witness said the soldiers requested to see Hamza Idris, Daily Trust’s political editor. The editor’s byline appeared on the newspaper’s Sunday lead story about the military operation in the north-east. When TheCable reached out to Sani Usman over the development, the army spokesman said he will “find out” what is going on. Following the invasion, Daily Trust took its social media pages to demand the release of its members of staff. “Whereabouts of #DailyTrust staff unknown,” the newspaper tweeted. The paper had reported that the military plans to reclaim Baga and other communities taken over by Boko Haram some weeks ago. The military authorities had earlier claimed that no territory was being occupied by the insurgents. Before the raid on the newspaper’s office in Abuja, military operatives were said to have also stormed the paper’s regional office in Maiduguri, Borno state, arresting the regional editor, Uthman Abubakar and a reporter, Ibrahim Sawab. Daily Trust reported that the soldiers shut the gate of the Maiduguri regional office after arresting the two editorial staff on sight at the time of the raid.
