In a recent interview held at his residence in Abuja on Sunday, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State addressed the incident that had initially been widely reported as an assassination attempt on him.
He clarified that the event was, in fact, a minor dispute between his security detail and military personnel responsible for road security.
Governor Bello emphatically stated that there was no intention to harm him, emphasizing that the altercation arose during the lawful execution of security duties by both the Nigerian Police Force personnel attached to his convoy and the military unit responsible for highway security.
While commending the combined efforts of security agencies in enhancing the safety of Kogi State residents and their property, the Governor urged the higher authorities of the involved agencies to investigate and take appropriate actions against any of their personnel found to have acted overzealously or unprofessionally in the incident.
Governor Bello urged the citizens of Kogi State to disregard any attempts by political opportunists to exploit the incident for the purpose of destabilizing the political landscape, particularly with the state’s upcoming 2023 governorship elections scheduled for November 11.
He assured the state of his safety and underlined the adequacy of security measures to guarantee a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process.
