The Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited with its joint venture partners has commenced the empowerment of no fewer than 1,172 youths and women in the Niger Delta region.

In a statement on Tuesday, the NAOC said the scheme, which began in Bayelsa and Rivers states, would be extended to Imo and Delta states, noting that at the end of the programme, a total of 1,172 youths and women would have been impacted.

The beneficiaries were presented with complete starter-packs for the set up of businesses in shoe making, barber’s shop, hair dressing, tiling, event planning, laundry services, furniture making, plumbing, auto/marine mechanics, catering, transportation, business centre/cyber café, agro processing, aluminum works, information technology, bakery and tailoring/fashion designing.

The international oil giant said the scheme was to promote socio-economic development through the establishment of small scale businesses for youths and women in the company’s operational states.

It said the programme would also contribute to a social change where youths and women who were technically skilled, but lacked the resources needed to start-up small scale businesses would be assisted with the necessary start-up tools to become self-reliant.
