Gov Mimiko Bans 'Okada' Riders In S'West Ondo
Ondo State Government has suspended the operation of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada in Akure metropolis with effect from Saturday.
The government also suspended ticketing activities of Okada operators across the state.
The suspension of the okada operations followed a protest embarked upon by the operators on Thursday over alleged extortion by the state government.
The operators during the protest described the directive of the government to them to obtain a new number plate as exploitative.
Announcing the action of the government, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Rotimi Adelola said the state government was shocked at the brigandage and destruction by commercial motorcycle operators who were against registration and identification made mandatory for monitoring, management and security purposes.
Adelola who noted that government admitted that protests are legitimate means of expressing grievances, said destructive protests are however way beyond what is permissible in any civilised society.
