Suspected IPOB members shot dead in Enugu during sit-at-home operation

In a recent operation in the early hours of Monday, September 18, 2023, a combined security force in Enugu State successfully thwarted plans by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a group affiliated with the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), to enforce an illegal sit-at-home order in the state.

The operation resulted in the death of three suspected ESN operatives.

The security forces, comprising Enugu State Police operatives, NPF Special Forces, and troops from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, launched the operation based on credible intelligence that led them to the hideout of these criminal elements in Ezioha Mgbowo, Awgu Local Government Area.

Upon arriving at the scene, the security team encountered resistance from the suspected ESN members, who opened fire on them.

In the ensuing gunfight, three of the assailants were neutralized, while others managed to escape, some sustaining gunshot wounds.

The recovered items from the operation included three pump-action guns, ten machetes, and other incriminating exhibits.

Authorities have initiated an intense manhunt to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects.

The Director of Media and Publicity for the secessionist group IPOB, Emma Powerful, disputed the identity of those arrested, claiming they were not affiliated with IPOB.
