WHO requests more information from China on respiratory illness surge

The World Health Organization (WHO) has formally requested more information from China regarding the recent surge in respiratory illnesses in the northern part of the country.

The increase in “influenza-like illness” since mid-October prompted the WHO to seek detailed data on the rise in respiratory illnesses and clusters of pneumonia in children.

China’s National Health Commission attributed the spike to the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens, including influenza and common bacterial infections affecting children.

The WHO urged preventive measures, such as vaccination and wearing masks, while awaiting China’s response to the information request.
