Tragedy struck along Stadium Road, near the Uruaebot market in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as a fatal accident involving a tanker and a 406 Peugeot car resulted in the loss of one life.

The incident transpired on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

The accident implicated a tanker with registration number MHA869XA and a 406 Peugeot car bearing registration number CL775ABT.

The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officially confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Enlightenment Officer, Paul James.

The cause of the accident has been attributed to overspeeding and the inadequate display of caution signs.

According to James, “On Thursday, 19th October 2023, a fatal crash occurred along Stadium Road by Uruaebot market, at about 10:40 AM, involving a tanker with registration number MHA869XA and a 406 Peugeot with registration number CL775ABC.

One person involved was confirmed dead and subsequently deposited at the hospital morgue.

FRSC operatives promptly responded to the crash scene after receiving a report of the incident.

It was determined, upon investigation, that speeding and insufficient caution sign displays were the primary factors contributing to the crash.”

The state Sector Commander of FRSC in Akwa, Matthew Olonisaye, described the incident as unfortunate and emphasized that it could have been prevented if all involved parties had adhered to traffic rules and regulations governing road usage.

As he extended condolences to the deceased’s family, Olonisaye also advised all road users to exercise caution and ensure the proper display of road signs to alert fellow motorists of potential hazards.
