Germany allocates €81m to ECOWAS for economic and security initiatives

The Federal Republic of Germany has extended financial support to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by providing €81 million.

This funding is aimed at addressing various pressing issues in the region, including security concerns, infrastructural gaps, and climate change.

Omar Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, announced this development during a press conference held in Abuja on Sunday.

The support was welcomed as part of a collaborative effort between ECOWAS and Germany, with a focus on key areas such as electricity, healthcare, peace, and security.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Federal Republic of Germany emphasized the importance of strengthening the partnership, especially in light of recent political instability in the region, as six coups have occurred in West Africa since 2020.
